SOITEC – New Press Release

La France prime a European consortium led by Soitec for its innovation in the field of semiconductors.

Paris, Bernin (Grenoble), December 17, 2020 – The French government has awarded the REFERENCE consortium led by Soitec, a world leader in semiconductor materials based in France, the distinction of “Star of Europe” for its innovation in the telecommunications sector.

Using technology based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates, REFERENCE, a project founded by the ECSEL joint venture[1], has developed industrial solutions for communication applications.

Frédérique Vidal, French Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation rewarded the consortium, recognizing “the emergence of a powerful European network which reinforces France in its driving role for autonomy technology of Europe. Joint achievements promote the next generation of semiconductor technologies enabling the advent of new solutions for 5G and paving the way for greater collaboration and recruitment opportunities in Europe.

In a multidisciplinary approach, REFERENCE brought together 15 partners from four European countries, bringing together manufacturers, marketing or using semiconductors (Soitec, STMicroelectronics, Globalfoundries, Siltronic, Sentronics, TELIT, ATEP, AED, Airbus), three of the most major European centers for applied research in microelectronics (CEA, FhG, IMEC) and three leading universities (UCB-Lyon, TU-Dresden, UBW-Munich).

Paul Boudre, Managing Director of Soitec, said:“The success of our continued involvement in the European ECSEL program helps us maintain our pole position in telecommunications. This illustrates our ability to translate our semiconductor innovations into true ecosystems and transform them into applications for end consumers. We are involved in ECSEL’s new initiatives, in particular BEYOND5, to strengthen the adoption of our technologies and we remain committed to supporting the European objective of fostering environmental sustainability and technological sovereignty. »

Bert De Colvenaer, Director General of ECSEL, warmly congratulates the consortium. “This is exactly what ECSEL aspires to: a series of projects independently selected on the basis of calls for projects based on the highest excellence, the highest impact and perfect execution, allowing rely on each other to provide unique and relevant ‘made in Europe’ technologies, used globally. We are very grateful that one of our projects has won this distinction: it proves once again that ‘designing together, working together and investing together’ at European level really does achieve results.

CEA-Leti, one of the main European research and technology organizations in the field of microelectronics, is at the crossroads of the world of research and that of industry. Emmanuel Sabonnadière, Director of CEA-Leti, said: “CEA-Leti supports the growth of European industry through these H2020 / ECSEL projects, a capacity which is even more crucial today in the context of European economic recovery plan. In 2019, CEA-Leti and Soitec launched the Substrate Innovation Center; by bringing together our skills, we are accelerating the development and transition to the production of new generations of innovative substrates.

Agenda

The turnover for the 3th quarter 2020-2021 will be published on January 21, 2021, after market close.
