Situation of the French Semiconductor Market in the 2ⁿᵈ quarter 2018
Paris, September 27, 2018 – The French semiconductor market totaled €488 million in the second quarter of 2018, according to data compiled by ACSIEL Alliance Electronique’s Club Semiconducteurs. This amount represents growth of 3.1% compared with the first quarter of 2018. Over a cumulative 12-month period, the French market is up 2.7%, showing favorable momentum.
In the second quarter of 2018, direct sales to OEMs alone resulted in sequential growth of 3.6% compared with the first quarter. It was mainly direct sales to the Smart Card and Industrial segments that drove second-quarter growth, with increases of 16.2% and 8.1% respectively. The Consumer/Computer segment also saw strong growth (+25.5%), but accounts for less than 3% of TAM.
The Automotive segment, by far the largest direct OEM market in France, saw a decline of -3.6% after a 2.7% rise in the first quarter. The Mil/Aero market posted a slight decline of -1.2%.
In second-quarter sales to OEMs, the main markets were Automotive (27.1%), Industrial (16.7%) and Smart Card (11.4%).
Sales to distributors rose by 2.2% in Q2 2018 compared with Q1, and by 6.6% compared with Q2 2017. Over the first 6 months of the year, sales to distributors accounted for over 36% of TAM France. According to ACSIEL, semiconductors for various industrial applications account on average for 60% of active component sales to distributors.
Microcontrollers dominate OEM sales by product
In terms of direct sales to OEMs by product family, the main contribution to growth came from the MOS-Logic (+18.4%) and MOS-Micro (+8.6%) categories. The MOS-Micro family is mainly made up of microcontrollers, which are used in all kinds of intelligent electronic systems, such as smart cards, automotive electronics and various industrial applications, in particular the highly dynamic connected objects segment. The MOS-Micro family as a whole accounted for 36% of direct sales to OEMs in the first half of 2018.
However, growth in sales to OEMs in the second quarter was penalized by declining sales of analog circuits (-11.5%), discrete circuits (-8.7%, following growth of 6.2% in the first quarter) and a slight slowdown in sensors and actuators (-2.0%).
