A key player in the energy transition, we are the first European institute entirely dedicated to new energy technologies.
We focus our work on the main pillars of the energy transition: solar energy, batteries, hydrogen, sustainable molecules and fuels, with a view to energy efficiency and the circular economy.
Based at the CEA-Grenoble center and the Ines campus in Chambéry, we develop complementary, competitive and environmentally-friendly solutions for an integrated vision of multi-vector, multi-scale and multi-temporal energy. Our research focuses on
– the development of more efficient and safer components, taking advantage of scale effects and modularity;
– proposing tools and solutions for decarbonizing industry and local communities;
– integrating economic, environmental and societal criteria by applying eco-innovation to all our projects.Our vocation is to serve industry by emphasizing our transfer and commercialization mission. Our active commitment to partnership research has been recognized since 2006 by the Carnot label, within Carnot Énergies du Futur. As a Technological Research Organization (RTO), we have built fruitful collaborations with our partners to promote a competitive, sovereign and sustainable economy. Our research infrastructures, our portfolio of patents and the expertise of our teams are dedicated to this objective.

The IEMN is a joint research unit of the CNRS which brings together over 450 collaborators across the sites of Villeneuve d’Ascq, Lille, and Valenciennes in the Hauts de France region. The activities of IEMN are organized around 5 thematic departments :
Nanostructured Materials and Components
Micro and Nano Biosystems
Micro and Nano Electronics, Optoelectronics, and Photonics
Telecommunications Technologies and Intelligent Systems
Acousticsand 22 research groups. A matrix organization with highly varied expertise and know-how enables research to be conducted on short, medium, and long-term scales. One third of our activities focus on long-term research (enabling the enrichment of our scientific and technological knowledge), and two thirds on collaborative and partnership-based research, on medium and short-term scales, with national and international industries (large corporations, SMEs, and startups).
To carry out our activities successfully, we have access to high-performance and innovative technological resources grouped within technological platforms that are open to academic laboratories and industries in controlled environment (iso 5 to 8). These include a clean room for micro and nano fabrication spanning over 1600 m2, as well as characterization and packaging platforms spread over more than 1400 m2, allowing for :
Hyperfrequency, optical, and photonic characterization
Near-Field Microscopy analysis
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) measurements
Advanced communication system characterization
Component and system assembly and packagingWe also have several standard commercial simulation tools (TCAD Silvaco, ADS, cadence, comsol, HFSS, etc.) and proprietary tools developed in-house to bridge theory and experimentation.
IEMN teams are involved in several national and international projects and are recognized for their scientific excellence.
The valorization and transfer of research works from the teams also involve the creation of innovative startups, some of which have become success story today.
The research’s offer of IEMN supports industrial projects in the telecommunications, automotive, railway, aerospace, space, biotechnology, and healthcare sectors.

Established in 1967, the IFTEC Institute is a resources and training center on electronic board manufacturing processes. Our main areas of expertise are the design of electronic boards, the manufacturing of printed circuits, components soldering, board cleaning and coating, electronic assembly reliability or cable and wire harness assemblies. Our pragmatic approach to training demands adequate facilities: this is why we have 1300m² worth of buildings in Bourg-la-Reine and Lyon, with professionally equipped classrooms and workshops. IFTEC has trained more than 26,000 engineers, technicians and operators over the past 20 years.
As a certified IPC training center since 2011, we certify Specialists, Experts and Trainers to the correct understanding and use of the main IPC standards (IPC-A-610, IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC 7711/7721, J-STD-001, IPC-A-600, CID, CID+). Our presence on IPC committees allows IFTEC to participate in the development of international standards for electronic manufacturing. We are an IPC member and an authorized distributor.
The IFTEC analysis laboratory located in our facilities in Bourg-la-Reine complements our training and certification activities by offering the industry a variety of expertise: preparation and analysis of microsection, ion contamination measurements, solderability measurements, X-ray analysis, SIR and BONO test, tensile test on wire assemblies.
