A new ambition to unite the national electronics industry

Professional organizations #ACSIEL, EMBEDDED France, SNESE, and SPDEI announce an initiative, in coordination with economic players grouped in the Strategic Committee de Sector (CSF), intended to unite and strengthen the entire sector of the national electronics industry in a complex environment.

Faced with global challenges and rapid technological developments, it is essential for France to maintain a leading position in the electronics sector and related fields (components, cards, embedded software, equipment).

The complex environment of the electronics industry

The electronics industry and its different components (components, boards, embedded software, equipment) are currently facing a set of common challenges which led to the idea of this initiative.

Among these challenges we can highlight:

  • A strong increase in demand for electronic products and embedded systems which are solutions to meet the two major societal challenges of digital transformation and the energy transition. This increase creates pressure on production capacities.
  • A significant need for research and development to remain at the forefront of innovation in a constantly evolving global context (cyber-physical systems, embedded artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, edge-computing and digital continuity, etc.).
  • A complex global supply chain that requires coordination with downstream sectors in order to balance supply and demand.
  • Geopolitical tensions creating uncertainty: American export restrictions, relations between China and Taiwan, as well as the Russo-Ukrainian war and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, have created a climate of uncertainty in the global electronics industry and a lack of visibility.
  • Upstream supply chains facing major challenges in terms of availability of raw materials, equipment and essential components.
  • A growing need to increase the attractiveness of the sector in order to fill open positions (18,000 over the next 3 years only in the field of components and several tens of thousands for embedded software and application solutions) and work with the academic world to develop skills.

To steer this project, the professional organizations ACSIEL Alliance Electronique, EMBEDDED France, SNESE, and SPDEI, have decided to appoint Alain Gorrec, current Chairman of SPDEI, as Project Manager.

Alain Gorrec, 64, is an engineer from INSA Lyon, with additional training at ESSEC. He has spent his entire career in the electronics industry, holding general management positions in French SMEs and an international electronics group.

French SME, of an international electronic components distribution group, and as an entrepreneur through the takeover of an SME specializing in the supply of products and services to the rail industry.

In collaboration with Frédérique LE GREVES, President of the CSF, the project manager’s main tasks for 2024 will be to establish the necessary contacts with the entire electronics industry ecosystem, including the upstream and downstream sectors, and to carry out all the steps and actions essential to the success of this initiative.

The French electronics industry in figures

The French electronics industry is one of the country’s key economic pillars, with sales of 15 billion euros, of which 4 billion euros are generated by exports, 5 billion euros in electronic assembly, 3 billion euros in connectors, passive components and PCBs, and 3 billion euros in embedded software, distribution and equipment.

This industry mobilizes 8,000 researchers in public research organizations, generates 170,000 indirect jobs and 80,000 direct jobs.
