Electronics barometer #ACSIEL – 1st quarter 2022

Electronics barometer #ACSIEL – 1st quarter 2022

Paris, June 10, 2022 – The Acsiel electronics barometer has been aggregating quarterly sales in the electronics sector since 2017 in France.

Two indices make up this barometer:

  • one indicates sales linked to electronic components (semiconductors, passives, printed circuits, connectors) and consumables (solder pastes, flux, accessories) intended for industry
  • the other refers to sales related to electronic test and measurement equipment, electronic card production equipment.

Stéphane MARTINEZ, new president of Acsiel Alliance Electronique, presented the electronics barometer for the first quarter of 2022 during the Electronics and Electricity meetings.

Analysis

  • Sales of electronic components and consumables in France in the first quarter of 2022 confirmed the clear recovery of the market observed in the fourth quarter of 2021. Our index exceeds the levels reached in 2019 before the COVID crisis.
  • Demand from industrial sectors has largely contributed to this sustained growth, particularly in applications linked to renewable energies (solar, wind) and energy efficiency in general.
  • Demand remains strong in the automotive sector despite its production difficulties linked to shortages of various materials and components, due to the strong growth in the average electronics content of vehicles, partly linked to the evolution of the product mix (increase in the share of electric vehicles in production).
  • Rising prices are also starting to impact growth, with manufacturers of components and consumables being forced to pass on at least in part the cost increases they experience. This phenomenon is expected to increase in the short term.

> Test and measurement equipment, production machines

Analysis

  • For test and measurement equipment and production machinery, the first quarter of 2022 reflects seasonality with a usual dip following the acceleration in the fourth quarter, which was particularly strong in 2021. However, the index of the first quarter of 2022 remains higher than the indices of the first three quarters of 2021.
  • Until the end of last year, manufacturers had significant stocks, some built up during the COVID crisis, when production continued while sales collapsed. The sector was thus able to benefit from the recovery and deliver to customers.
  • At the start of 2022, the situation has radically changed. Inventories are at their lowest and production times have lengthened due to supply difficulties linked to shortages of components and materials aggravated by logistical problems.
  • These circumstances constitute a significant obstacle to investments and billings.
