Situation of the French semiconductor market in the 2ⁿᵈ quarter of 2021

Paris, October 12, 2021 – The French semiconductor market fell by 2% in the second quarter of 2021 but remains at a high level close to 500 million euros, according to Acsiel Alliance Electronique. This slight decline follows three consecutive quarters marked by robust growth which peaked at 25% in the first quarter. The market continues to recover on an annual moving average (see attached graph).

From one year to the next, growth which was 10% in the first quarter accelerated to 48% in the second quarter of 2021 compared to the second quarter of 2020 marked by a sharp drop due to the health crisis.

The second quarter result reveals contrasting trends depending on the segments. The sequential market contraction is mainly due to the decline in direct sales to end customers in the Consumer/Computer and Industrial segments, which had benefited from strong growth in the first quarter. Conversely, sales to the Aeronautics/Space/Defense and Smart card segments increased significantly. A favorable trend reversal has thus been observed on the Smart card market for two quarters.

Like the first quarter, despite strong demand, sales to the Automotive segment only grew by 2%, hampered in particular by the shortage of components. Thus, after a huge rebound in the second half of 2020, the automotive components market tends to flatten out while remaining at a high level.

By product family, the drop in direct sales in the second quarter is primarily linked to the sharp decline recorded for the MOS Micro category and, to a lesser extent, for the MOS Logic and Optoelectronics circuits. The growth of Analog and Discrete circuits is far from being able to compensate for the decline in the families mentioned above, so that direct sales to the end customer resulted in a decline of 7% in the second quarter compared to the first.

We note with satisfaction that Distribution sales recorded an increase of 10%, which constitutes the third consecutive quarter of growth. Around 60% of these sales are intended for Industrial, a segment in which the rebound in direct sales has also been less strong than in Automotive.
