The French semiconductor market recorded a decline of -4% in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter (which was revised slightly downwards, to €717 million). According to ACSIEL Alliance Electronique, sales in Q2 represented an amount of €689 million, representing growth of 13% compared to the second quarter of 2022. This marks a trend of slowing growth year-on-year since it was 24 % in the first quarter. Over the first half of the year as a whole, the balance remains largely positive with growth of 18% compared to the first half of 2022.

The #Acsiel Equipment & Services and Test & Measurements College has just finalized the barometer for the 1st quarter of 2023.

For the French semiconductor market, the year 2023 opened with a sixth consecutive quarter of growth with +2%, according to Acsiel Alliance Electronique, with a record billing amount of €738 million. This growth is mainly due to sales via distribution (+15%). Direct sales to end customers overall experienced a one-off decline of 4%, which hides disparities since the automotive and industrial markets grew by around 10%. Year-on-year, growth in the total French market was 29% compared to the first quarter of 2022.

The French semiconductor market recorded sequential growth of 15% in the fourth quarter (including +22% for direct sales and +5% via distribution) to 720 million euros, according to Acsiel Alliance Electronique. This growth illustrates the resistance of the French market compared to the entire European market which recorded a decline of almost 2% in the fourth quarter, and even more in view of the 8% drop in the global market (according to the WSTS) .

The trend remained positive in the French semiconductor market in the third quarter with sequential growth of 3.3%, to 590 million euros, a record level, according to Acsiel Alliance Electronique. Year-on-year, growth amounted to +44% in the third quarter of 2021, a clear acceleration after +25% in the second quarter of 2022 and +10% in the first. Over the last twelve months, the French market has crossed the threshold of 2 billion euros (at 2.18 billion euros) for the first time in seven years and it is now certain that this threshold will also be largely exceeded on the whole of 2022. The French market index as a rolling twelve-month average has been growing constantly for seven quarters (see graph below).

The French semiconductor market continued to benefit from a favorable situation in the second quarter with sequential growth of 6%, to 571 million euros, according to Acsiel Alliance Electronique. This represents growth of 25% compared to the second quarter of 2021.

According to Acsiel Alliance Electronique, the rebound of the French semiconductor market was confirmed in the fourth quarter of 2020 with sequential growth by 13% (including Distribution sales), to 411 million euros, following growth of 7% in the third quarter. On an annual basis, this represents a contraction of 8% compared to the fourth quarter of 2019, but it is a marked improvement compared to the low point of the cycle reached in the second quarter at -25% year on year.

Globalization, as well as the complexity of supply chains in the electronics industry, cyclically lead to disruptions in supply times and therefore in the availability of components, printed circuits, then assembled cards for all industrialists in the sector.

In unison with the European market, the French semiconductor market has rebounded significantly in the third quarter of 2020 after being strongly affected in the second by the economic slowdown due to the health crisis. According to Acsiel Alliance Electronique, sales in France reached 402 million euros, representing growth of 13% quarter-on-quarter and 3% compared to the third quarter of 2019. Going unnoticed in the statistics from the first quarter, the “Covid effect” is obvious in the second (see attached graph). The sharp decline in economic activity has had a significant impact on the semiconductor market in France and throughout Europe. While the WSTS announced a 20% drop in billings in Europe in the second quarter compared to the first, the French market fell by 19% during the same period, according to Acsiel, for an amount of 362 million euros. . The French market is also 19% below its value in the second quarter of 2019. The decline is 14% over the first 6 months of the year and 12% over a rolling 12-month period.

The global semiconductor market has suffered a significant slowdown since the fourth quarter of 2018, affecting all product families and regions. Like the European market, the French market has also been affected by this correction, but less strongly and with a time lag, as the cumulative results for the first three quarters of 2019 show.

“Reinventing our SMEs: The essential role of CSR

On the occasion of its general meeting, ACSIEL – Alliance Electronique organized a press conference to present its vision of the French electronics market and its Barometer at the end of March 2017.

ACSIEL and WE Network announce the mobilization of the French electronics industry for the World Electronics Forum 2017.

Printed circuit board manufacturers have been experiencing significant price increases for several months now. The pressure on copper is directly reflected in a 15-20% increase in the price of related consumables. Raw materials prices are up overall by 8%, with some items even more critical, such as laminates, which are up by 15 to 25% depending on the supplier, and gold salts, which are up by 10%. Unfortunately, these factors make an increase in finished PCB prices inevitable.

As we predicted in the previous Press Release, and although semiconductor manufacturers and suppliers in France managed to stay on course in the first half of 2016, the third quarter saw a downturn in the market.
Alas, this correction leads to an alignment with the annual trend of the global market.

So, for the first time, we present our “ACSIEL French Electronics Barometer”, backed by business results to the end of September 2016. We can read the evolution of activity in Active Component (SC), Printed Circuit Board (PCB), Equipment & Services (E&S) and Test & Measurement (T&M). The curves correspond to a sliding average over four quarters, compared with a reference level set at the average for the four quarters of 2010.

As we predicted in the previous Press Release, although semiconductor manufacturers and suppliers in France managed to stay on course in the first quarter of 2016, the second half of the year saw a market downturn unfortunately in line with the general – and global – decline in the sector, with no sudden improvement in sight at least for this year.

For the first quarter of 2016, the total market, including OEM and retail sales, is estimated at €503.5 million, virtually equivalent (-0.8%) to the previous quarter, but down -1.8% year-on-year.
